Flooding in Great Eccleston

During heavy rain and possible flooding, certain areas of the village tend to collect water and can become impassable. The information below identifies locations that have flooded previously and alternative approaches residents may need to consider.

Flooding conditions can change quickly. Please check official warnings and follow any instructions from the police, emergency services and local authorities before travelling.

Official warnings may not cover localised surface-water flooding on roads.

Stay Safe Around Floodwater

Do not walk or drive through floodwater. It can be deeper or faster-moving than it appears and may conceal hazards. Never pass road-closed signs or barriers, even if a road looks passable.

The routes described below are local information, not confirmed safe diversions. Only use roads that are open and safe. If there is an immediate danger to life or someone is trapped by floodwater, call 999.

Areas Prone to Flooding

Three areas of the village are known to flood during heavy rain. The local access advice for each area is shown alongside its location.

Raikes Road

By Moon's Funeral Parlour

If Raikes Road is flooded and you need access to the Lancaster Avenue area, the local guidance describes a route via Pennine Way, Chester Avenue and York Drive. However, York Drive may also be flooded when the river is high. Do not attempt this route unless all roads involved are open and safe.

If you need to reach the main road and Raikes Road is flooded, turn around where it is safe and take an open route back through the village to the main road.

Copp Lane

By the Dovecote

If Copp Lane is flooded, turn around safely. The local guidance suggests travelling via the main road towards Windy Harbour, but Beech Road in Elswick can also flood. Access from the Elswick end of Copp Lane may be possible only when roads are open and safe. Always follow official closures and directions.

Lancaster Avenue

When the pump stops working

If Lancaster Avenue is flooded, do not drive into the road. The local guidance identifies pedestrian access from Lancaster Close, but only use this if the route is not flooded and is safe to walk.
